We often hear the phrase “sleep like a baby”. This phrase could give out a lot of misconception about the sleeping pattern of babies. We thought that they would sleep most of the day so newborn parents may get disappointed and frustrated when this happens otherwise.
It is important that we understand the sleeping pattern of newborn to set realistic goals and at the same time maximize the benefit that sleep gives to our little ones.

1. Babies have short sleep cycles than you do.
Sleep cycles is the phase of going from light sleep to deep sleep. While adult sleep cycle lasts an average of 90 minutes, infant’s sleep cycle only lasts for 45 to 60 minutes. If you observe your baby sleeping, you would notice that about an hour after he had fallen asleep, he would either toss a bit, squirm, grimace or breathe irregularly. The transition from light to deep sleep is a vulnerable period as baby may tend to wake up if there is any uncomfortable or upsetting stimulus that occurs.
Help your baby ease back from light to deep sleep by singing a soothing lullaby, lay a comforting hand on her back, or just simply be there next to her if you’re co-sleeping.
2. Babies learn in their sleep
If you think that newborns are just simply dozing off their days away, think again. Babies are actually learning in their sleep, they learn language not only when they are awake but also when they are asleep.
Maximize the learning benefit that sleeping provides by ensuring that you create a sleep-friendly environment to your baby. Avoid too harsh lights or sounds that could disrupt your baby’s sleep.
3. Sleep cycles are about 45 to 60 minutes.
Since babies have shorter sleep cycles that we do, some of them would need your help in getting them back to sleep. Only a small percentage of babies are “self-soothers” or “resettlers” , they are the ones who can transition from light to deep sleep without completely awakening and when they do, they can put themselves back into a deep sleep.
Parents should create an environment that help babies in going through this vulnerable period of transitioning from light to deep sleep.
4. Sleep begins to settle around the 3-6 month mark.
Without a doubt, the first couple of months would be the hardest months for the parents. Most newborn parents encounter fatigue and sleep deprivation as their babies seem to be awake mostly at night. While you feel like you’re losing your sanity, hang on as their sleep pattern changes.
Most babies tend to sleep longer at night when they reach their 3rd month. They spend more time awake during day time and develop a longer sleeping pattern at night time.
5. Night wakings are important.
The shorter sleep cycles that baby has causes a lot of night wakings. Whilst this may sound troublesome to newborn parents, it is important that you realize that these night awakenings are important.
Babies, especially newborn, has smaller stomach so they need to feed more frequently than adult do. If not for these wakings, your baby would be so hungry and grumpy when they get up. Plus, not being sufficiently fed could hinder their growth and development.
6. Babies don’t sleep as deeply as you do.
